Outside group buys statewide ads to boost Preston Love Jr.

LINCOLN — Nebraska’s surprise U.S. Senate race took a small hit from outside spending by a progressive SuperPAC tied to former Omaha-area U.S. House candidate Kara Eastman .

Cavalry PAC will purchase a television ad across the state this week, with a $100,000 donation from University of Nebraska Reggent Barbara Weitz and a $20,000 donation from her daughter Katie million dollars. Eastman helps run the PAC along with news commentator Cenk Uygur, best known for co-hosting the online show “The Young Turks.”

Eastman, an upstart candidate when she first ran in 2018, said her team is investing in a candidate who doesn’t have as much support from typical Democratic donors or party establishments.

“Preston Love Jr. is an excellent candidate,” she said of the North Omaha civil rights activist. “When you’re up against a billionaire like Ricketts, it’s really hard to compete.”

As of the end of June, Love had raised $164,000 and listed $6,500 in campaign cash on hand. Ricketts raised $4.3 million and listed $1.7 million in cash on hand.

The ad features child actors who look like a young Love and a young Ricketts. It shows the young Love character talking about wanting to play football for the Huskers and make his community a better place.

The young Ricketts character says he will use “Daddy’s money” to disenfranchise women and get into the Senate.

Jessica Flanagain, a political consultant for the Ricketts campaign, said in response to the ad, “Senator Ricketts has been elected statewide twice in Nebraska and will be elected Re-elected in November About this childishness – if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it…”
