Fisher gets Trump’s backing in race against Osborne • Ne

LINCOLN — Nebraska Republican Sen. Deb Fisher received an expected endorsement this week from the party’s presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump.

The timing of the endorsement hints at solidifying support among some of the Republican base after some recent polls showed the race was closer than expected.

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he supports Fisher’s re-election bid and opposes Omaha union leader and registered independent Dan Osborn.

Trump said Fisher “did a great job” in the Senate. In the post, Trump also attacked Osborne as a “Bernie Sanders Democrat who does not represent Nebraska’s values.”

“Deb Fisher has my complete approval – she won’t let you down!” Trump wrote.

Fisher accepted the endorsement online, saying on Twitter that she looked forward to working with the former president to secure the border, lower costs for families and help Nebraska agriculture.

She has said her opponents are Democrats in sheep’s clothing, and her supporters have begun trying to negatively define Osborne. She has the wherewithal to do so.

As of the end of June, Fisher had raised $6.2 million and listed nearly $3 million in campaign cash on hand. Osborne raised $1.6 million and showed he had $650,000 cash on hand.

Osborne has avoided saying which presidential candidate he supports or which party he would caucus with if elected. He angered some leaders of the Nebraska Democratic Party because they sought their support before the primary but then backed down after it.

In a pamphlet distributed by the Nebraska Democratic Party, the party is still encouraging its members to support Osborne in an effort to break the Nebraska Republican Party’s stranglehold on statewide and federal offices.

Nebraska Republicans have a 2-to-1 advantage in registration over Democrats. Osborne’s supporters say his bid is in part an attempt to demonstrate whether party labels can hinder candidates.

Osborne’s supporters spent months clearing the votes of competing candidates, leaving him and Fisher without Democratic or third-party candidates in the race.

Osborne campaign spokesman Dustin Wahl echoed Osborne’s previous statements, saying Fisher is “fully integrated into Washington.” He said she would “do whatever it takes to stay there” with the company’s help.

“Nebraskaians can’t trust Deb Fisher,” Wahl said, referring to her criticism of candidate Trump in 2016. Instead she groveled for his support.
