20 projects to share nearly $11 million in NE affordable housing funding

LINCOLN — This week, the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund announced nearly $11 million in grants.
The fund was established by the Nebraska Legislature in 1996 to meet the state’s affordable housing needs and is funded by a portion of document stamp taxes on real estate transactions.
A “competitive” process
The Nebraska Department of Economic Development administers the program, which provides assistance to local governments, public housing authorities, community action agencies, nonprofits and for-profit organizations that work with these entities.
Trust fund funds can be used for housing-related projects, new construction or rehabilitation, or for first-time homebuyers through direct assistance such as down payments and closing costs.
DED said this year’s cycle was “very competitive” – with 52 applications requesting nearly $31 million.
The state agency selected 20 separate projects to share $10.72 million to support the development of at least 253 housing units.
