23 projects to share nearly $13 million in NE affordable housing funding

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund announced nearly $13 million in grants Tuesday.

The fund was established by the Nebraska Legislature in 1996 to meet the state’s affordable housing needs and is funded by a portion of document stamp taxes on real estate transactions.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development administers the program, which provides assistance to local governments, public housing authorities, community action agencies, nonprofits and for-profit organizations that work with these entities.

‘Competition is fierce’

Trust fund funds can be used for housing-related projects, new construction or rehabilitation, or for first-time homebuyers through direct assistance such as down payments and closing costs.

DED said the 2023 cycle was “highly competitive,” with 70 applications seeking approximately $42 million in funding.

The state agency selected 23 separate projects to share $12.75 million to support the development of at least 264 housing units.

DED Director KC Belitz said The program has been proven to generate strong interest.

“This year, funding requests from high-quality applicants far exceeded DED’s spending authority,” he said. “Each winner made an especially compelling case for their project’s ability to meet local housing needs.”
